Martina, a member of our food production team, came to the United States fourteen years ago from Mexico’s state of Morelos. After moving to Boise following a few years in Chicago, she and her three children lived in a local shelter, where she enrolled in English courses with the help of the shelter’s director. Her case manager later referred her to Create Common Good, where she learned valuable job skills in the Level One course, and transitioned onto our full-time food production staff following her graduation.
Since coming to CCG, Martina’s life has changed through learning and acquiring the skills she needs to work in an industrial kitchen and as a prep cook. She’s overcome her barriers – including limited English skills, a surgery to prevent breast cancer, and the inability to find childcare for her children. Create Common Good is a team, she says, and she’s a valuable player on it.
