Create Common Good and its team have done a lot for me over the last three years, so I’d like to begin this post by saying thank you. Thank you for always taking my ideas seriously, for teaching me the importance of gratitude, for writing me letters of recommendation, for putting up with the hectic schedule of an overbooked high school student, for feeding me lunch, for teaching me how to merengue, and much more. Everyone that I’ve met at CCG has made me feel valued and at home, and I can’t begin to express what that means to me.
I think that it’s important that everyone volunteer or contribute to their community in some way, and I chose to do so at Create Common Good in January of 2013. Since then, I’ve gone from filing papers and updating project boards to working on community engagement projects and helping to plan and implement social media campaigns. CCG has watched me grow as a student, a volunteer, and a person, and has offered me opportunities to contribute to the cause while gaining skills that I know I’ll use as I graduate high school and move to university next year (yikes!).
At the root of everything, this internship has taught me to be kind to others, to realize that people have struggles that you can’t see, and to always trust in my own creativity. It has kept me on my toes and welcomed me into a productive and positive office environment that not many adolescents get to experience. All people have skills to contribute toward the good of their community, and Create Common Good has helped to cultivate mine.
